A Message from
Roberto Clemente, Jr.
December 1, 2004
Dear Friends:I was six-years-old when my father, Mr. Roberto Clemente Walker, stepped up to the plate to assist the earthquake victims of Nicaragua. 'With desperation, I shared a premonition with my family about the fate of my father's flight to help humanity. "Unfortunately, I lacked the persuasive skills to stop the flight. By 9:30 p.m., my father's plane crashed into the sea. My brothers and I lost a father who had a heart of gold and my mother lost the love of her life.
My mother has not remarried and the memory of that day continues to play in my mind. Throughout the years, I have lived with the guilt of not being able to save my father's life. It has been almost 32 years since my father's body was buried at sea. In retrospect, the burial was appropriate, as my father was a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates his entire 18-year baseball career. Although I could not stop my father, I will finish what he promised the people of Nicaragua. If God is willing, and with your help, on December 31, 2004, I will board a plane in Puerto Rico with the last 16,000 pounds of aid and deliver it, as my father promised to the people of Nicaragua"
I want to thank Project Club Clemente, Inc., and its founder, Eliezer Rodriguez, for his determination to promote, celebrate and educate others about my father's legacy. I want to thank everyone who has stepped up to the plate to support "The Flight for Humanity (Mr. Clemente’s Last-At-Bat)". 'When this flight is completed I believe my father's soul will finally rest in peace. Bendicion Papi!
Sincerely,
