Message from Eliezer Rodriguez, Esq.
CEO/founder of Project Club Clemente, Inc.It was not an easy decision to put my law practice on hold to pursue a dream. Four years later, I am at peace with my decision and I thank god for giving me the strength to persevere. When I first started this organization, the idea was to thank people for doing what I call "A Clemente," a good deed that reflects Mr. Roberto Clemente's humanitarian spirit. The organization has evolved and today our mission is to promote, educate and celebrate Mr. Clemente's legacy.
My co-workers at Langsam Property Services, my family and friends know the extent Project Club Clemente has gone through to fulfill our mission. We have done some incredible things. In 2002, a decision was made for me to run 76 miles 3,000 feet (Mr. Clemente's 3,000 hits converted into miles and feet) over a seven-day period to call attention to the 30th Anniversary of Mr. Clemente's 3,000th hit and his death. It took me 42 running hours to complete this excruciating run and three days in bed to recover. In 2003, I pedaled the same distance and completed a Bike Tour of New York's five boroughs in 10 1/2 hours. Like the previous year, I spent the next three days in bed recovering from aches and pains in places I never imagined.
This year, we want to teach our youth the value of making and keeping commitments. What better way to get our message across than by completing Mr. Clemente's last humanitarian effort? Mr. Clemente made a commitment on December 31, 1972, that he would personally deliver the last 16,000 pound of aid to the earthquake victims of Nicaragua. The plane crashed shortly after taking off and the mission was never completed. lf it is God's will, on December 31, 2005, a flight will leave Puerto Rico and deliver the promised 16,000 pounds of aid to Nicaragua. The ultimate tribute will be paid to Mr. Clemente by his son, 'Roberto Clemente, Jr., who will be the first person off the plane to complete what his father started. This is a tribute long overdue and I am thankful for playing a role in what we are calling "The Flight for Humanity."
I want to thank my friend Sheldon Mann for introducing me to Mark Engel. Mark, Project Club Clemente exists because you decided my dream was worth pursuing. You gave us some office space, made calls on our behalf and you gave us start-up money. I will never forget your generosity and I will forever be grateful
